Selecting the Right Autosampler Vial

Autosampler vials are the final container between sample preparation and instrument injection. The right vial protects sample integrity and ensures consistent chromatographic results. Clear glass (Type 1 Class A borosilicate) is the default for most HPLC and GC analyses. Amber glass provides UV protection for light-sensitive analytes such as vitamins, PAHs, and certain pharmaceuticals. Choose your closure type based on your autosampler model: screw-thread (9-425) for most Agilent, Waters, and Shimadzu systems; crimp for headspace GC; and snap-cap for high-throughput labs needing fast capping.

Low-volume samples? Use a micro-insert (100-300 uL) inside a standard 2 mL vial to reduce dead volume and improve recovery. Volatile analytes? Crimp caps with PTFE/butyl septa provide the best seal integrity for headspace and purge-and-trap GC. EPA methods? Our 20 mL and 40 mL VOA vials with open-top caps and PTFE-lined septa meet EPA 524.2, 624, and 8260 requirements.

Autosampler Vials FAQ

Use amber vials when your analytes are photosensitive. This includes PAHs, certain pesticides, vitamins (especially A, D, E, K), retinoids, and some pharmaceutical compounds. Amber glass blocks UV light below approximately 450 nm. For most routine HPLC and GC work with non-photosensitive analytes, clear glass is preferred because it allows visual inspection of the sample.

PTFE/Silicone is the most versatile - the PTFE face contacts the sample (chemically inert) and the silicone back provides resealing. Use this for HPLC and GC liquid injections. PTFE/Red Rubber is economical for single-injection applications. Butyl/PTFE provides the lowest gas permeability for headspace GC and volatile organic analysis.

Our standard 2 mL, 12x32mm vials with 9-425 screw threads fit the vast majority of HPLC and GC autosamplers from Agilent, Waters, Shimadzu, Thermo, and PerkinElmer. Crimp vials (11mm) fit Agilent headspace samplers and similar models. Check your instrument manual for the required vial dimensions if unsure.

A flat-bottom insert sits in the vial with a wider base and is easier to handle, but has more dead volume. A conical (tapered) insert concentrates the sample at the bottom tip, reducing dead volume and improving recovery for samples under 100 uL. Use conical inserts with spring bottoms for the best results with limited-volume samples.
