Automated Magnetic Bead Purification
Magnetic tip combs are disposable plastic combs with embedded magnets that capture paramagnetic beads from solution. They are the consumable workhorse of KingFisher Flex, KingFisher Apex, and similar automated magnetic particle processors used for high-throughput DNA, RNA, and protein purification.
💡How Tip Combs Work
The processor lowers the tip comb into a deep-well plate containing sample and magnetic beads. The comb’s magnets collect the beads (with bound nucleic acid), then transfer them through wash and elution plates. Each comb is used once per extraction run to prevent cross-contamination between samples.
⚠️Instrument Compatibility
Tip combs are instrument-specific. Verify that you are ordering combs designed for your exact processor model (e.g., KingFisher Flex 96, KingFisher Apex 96). Combs from different instruments have different magnet spacing and comb geometry and are not interchangeable.

No. Tip combs are single-use disposables. Reusing combs risks carry-over contamination between extraction runs and degrades bead capture efficiency as residual beads accumulate on the magnets.
Use standard 96-well deep-well plates (recommended 1.0–2.2 mL well volume) that are compatible with your magnetic processor. Our 96 deep-well plates are validated for use with KingFisher systems.
Store tip combs at room temperature in their original sealed packaging. Keep them away from strong magnetic fields that could demagnetize the embedded magnets. Typical shelf life is 2–3 years.
