Browse Filter PaperHow to Choose a Filtration Method
Syringe filters are the standard choice for HPLC, GC, and LC-MS sample prep — attach to a syringe, push your sample through, and collect clean filtrate in a vial. Filter vials combine the filter and autosampler vial into one device for high-throughput workflows. Membrane filters are flat discs used with vacuum or pressure holders for large-volume environmental and QC samples. Filter paper handles gravity and Buchner funnel filtration for general lab work.
Which method is right for your workflow?
| Method | Best For | Sample Volume | Throughput |
|---|---|---|---|
| Syringe Filters | HPLC, GC, LC-MS sample cleanup | 0.5–100 mL | 1–100 samples/day |
| Filter Vials | High-throughput autosampler prep | 0.5–1.5 mL | 50–500 samples/day |
| Membrane Filters | Vacuum filtration, environmental testing | 100 mL – 10 L | 1–20 samples/day |
| Filter Paper | Gravity filtration, general lab | 10 mL – 5 L | 1–50 samples/day |
Chromatography? Start with syringe filters (routine) or filter vials (high-throughput). Environmental? Use membrane filters with a vacuum setup. General lab? Filter paper in a funnel is the simplest approach. Match your membrane chemistry to your solvent: PTFE for organics, PES/Nylon for aqueous.
Filtration FAQ
Use 0.22µm for UHPLC columns with sub-3µm packings and for sterile filtration. Use 0.45µm for standard HPLC with 5µm packings. Use 1.0µm or larger for pre-filtration of heavily particulate samples.
A syringe filter attaches to a syringe and filters into a separate collection vial. A filter vial combines the filter membrane and autosampler vial into one device — press the plunger directly, no syringe needed. Filter vials are faster for high-throughput autosampler prep but cost more per sample.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is universally compatible with organic solvents, acids, and bases. It's hydrophobic, so pre-wet with methanol or use H-PTFE for aqueous samples. Polypropylene also handles strong acids and bases well.
