Finding the Right Pipette Tip
Universal tips fit all major manual pipette brands (Eppendorf, Gilson, Thermo, Brand) and are the standard choice for most labs. LTS (LiteTouch System) tips are specifically designed for Rainin pipettes with the LTS ejection system - they require lower insertion and ejection force, reducing repetitive strain. Robotic tips are conductive tips engineered for capacitive liquid-level sensing on Hamilton, Tecan, and Beckman automated platforms. Dispenser tips (Combitips) are used with repeater pipettes for repetitive dispensing of fixed volumes.

🛡️When to Use Filter Tips
Filter tips contain a hydrophobic polyethylene aerosol barrier that prevents sample and aerosol contamination of the pipette shaft. Use filter tips when working with PCR templates, infectious agents, volatile organics, radioactive isotopes, or any sample that could contaminate subsequent pipetting. The filter does not affect aspiration accuracy but adds a small cost premium. For non-sensitive applications (buffer prep, media aliquoting), standard non-filter tips are more economical.

Low-retention tips have a hydrophobic surface treatment that reduces liquid adhesion to the inner tip wall. This improves volumetric accuracy and sample recovery, especially important when pipetting viscous samples, detergent-containing solutions, protein-rich media, or precious reagents where every microliter matters. Standard tips are sufficient for buffers, water, and non-sticky solutions.
Yes. Use sterile, filter tips for all PCR work. The aerosol barrier prevents cross-contamination of template DNA between samples, and sterile certification ensures the tips are DNase/RNase-free and human DNA-free. This is critical for diagnostic PCR, forensic applications, and any amplification where contamination would invalidate results.
Technically universal tips can seat on an LTS shaft, but the fit is not optimal and may leak or require excessive force. LTS pipettes are specifically designed for the LTS tip geometry which uses a cylindrical seal rather than a friction cone. For accurate and comfortable pipetting, always use LTS-specific tips with Rainin LTS pipettes.
We carry conductive tips for Hamilton STAR/Nimbus (50 uL, 300 uL, 1000 uL), Tecan LiHa (200 uL, 1000 uL), and Tecan MCA (50 uL, 200 uL). Conductive tips enable capacitive liquid-level detection, which improves aspiration accuracy and prevents tip crashes. Make sure to match the tip to your specific platform - Hamilton and Tecan tips are not interchangeable.
