Matching Vials to Your Instrument and Method

Your vial choice depends on your instrument autosampler and analytical method. Autosampler vials (2mL, 9mm or 11mm) are the standard for HPLC, UHPLC, and LC-MS. Headspace vials (10–20mL) are used with headspace-GC for volatile analysis. VOA vials (40mL) are required by EPA methods for drinking water and wastewater volatiles. Always match the cap closure type (crimp, snap, or screw) to your autosampler tray.

💡Septum Material Matters

PTFE/Silicone — universal choice, chemically inert, reseals well. PTFE/Red Rubber — economical, single-injection use. Pre-slit PTFE — reduces needle coring for sensitive LC-MS work. For headspace analysis, use butyl rubber septa to prevent volatile loss. Always check that your septum thickness matches your autosampler needle stroke.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Chromatography Vials FAQ

Crimp caps are crimped onto the vial with a tool — most secure seal, best for volatiles and LC-MS. Snap caps push on by hand — fastest to use, good for HPLC. Screw caps thread on — easy to open/close, reusable. Your autosampler tray determines which type you need.

Use amber vials for light-sensitive compounds (photodegradable drugs, vitamins, some pesticides). Clear vials are fine for most applications and let you visually inspect your sample before injection.

Use inserts when your sample volume is too small to reach the needle tip in a standard 2mL vial (typically below 500µL). Inserts sit inside the vial and position your small-volume sample where the needle can reach it.

Yes. Our 40mL VOA vials with PTFE-lined caps meet the requirements of EPA Methods 524.2, 524.4, and 624.1 for volatile organic compound analysis in water. Certified clean vials are available for trace-level work.
