Specimen Collection for Every Sample Type
Proper specimen collection is the first step in reliable diagnostic testing. We carry a full range of pre-analytical collection devices designed to preserve specimen integrity from the point of collection through transport and processing. All products meet applicable regulatory standards and are available in individual and bulk packaging.
Matching the collection device to the specimen
| Specimen | Collection Device | Additive | Common Tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood (Serum) | Red-top or SST tube | None / Clot activator + gel | Chemistry panels, serology, drug levels |
| Blood (Plasma) | Lavender (EDTA) or green (heparin) tube | Anticoagulant | CBC, coagulation, molecular testing |
| Respiratory | Nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab + VTM | Viral transport medium | PCR (respiratory viruses, COVID-19) |
| Urine | Specimen cup with screw cap | None / preservative | Urinalysis, drug screening, culture |
| Saliva | Saliva collection funnel + stabilizer | DNA/RNA stabilizer | Genetic testing, hormone assays |
VTM maintains virus viability during transport from the collection site to the testing laboratory. Our VTM formulations are compatible with PCR-based molecular assays and viral culture. Store VTM kits at 2–8°C and transport specimens on cold packs within the manufacturer’s specified stability window (typically 48–72 hours at 2–8°C).
Specimen Collection FAQ
We stock the major tube types by additive: lavender (K2-EDTA), green (lithium heparin), red (no additive), gold/SST (clot activator + gel separator), blue (sodium citrate), and gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). Each tube type is designed for specific test categories.
We carry both. Flocked swabs have perpendicular nylon fibers that improve specimen collection and release compared to traditional spun polyester. Flocked swabs are preferred for PCR-based molecular testing due to superior analyte recovery.
Yes. We offer micro-collection tubes and capillary collection devices for pediatric and low-volume blood draws. These collect 200–500 µL and are available with the same additive options as standard venipuncture tubes.
Our VTM kits have a shelf life of 12–18 months when stored at 2–8°C. Check the lot-specific expiration date on each package. Do not use expired VTM as the preservative properties may be compromised.
