Selecting the Right Autosampler Vial
Autosampler vials are the final container before your sample enters the chromatographic system. The vial material, color, and cleanliness specification all affect analytical results. Our vials are manufactured from Type I borosilicate glass (USP Type I / 33 expansion) for excellent chemical resistance and low extractables.
Clear vs. Amber, Standard vs. Certified
| Feature | Clear Glass | Amber Glass |
|---|---|---|
| Light Protection | None | Blocks UV <400 nm |
| Best For | Stable compounds, general HPLC | Photosensitive analytes, vitamins, PAHs |
| Visual Inspection | Full visibility of sample | Limited visibility |
| Specification | Standard | Certified Clean |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | Machine washed | Cleaned and tested for extractables |
| Certificate | No | Lot-specific COA included |
| Use Case | Routine analysis | Trace analysis, EPA methods, pharmaceutical QC |
| Silanized Option | No | Available (deactivated surface) |
If you analyze basic compounds, amines, or polar analytes that adsorb to glass surfaces, use silanized (deactivated) vials. Silanization replaces active silanol groups with an inert methyl layer, reducing analyte binding and improving peak shape and recovery, especially at low concentrations.
Autosampler Vial FAQ
9-425 refers to the screw thread specification: 9 mm thread diameter with a 425 thread finish. This is the universal standard for HPLC and GC autosampler vials, compatible with most major instrument platforms including Agilent, Waters, Shimadzu, and Thermo Fisher.
Reuse is generally not recommended for quantitative analysis. Residual analytes can carry over between samples, and septa lose their sealing integrity after being pierced. For qualitative screening or solvent blanks, vials can be washed and reused, but always replace the cap and septum.
Screw cap (9-425) vials provide the most secure seal and are standard for HPLC and GC. Snap caps (11mm) are faster to close and common in high-throughput labs. Crimp caps (11mm) provide the tightest seal for volatile samples and headspace analysis. Match the closure type to your autosampler tray.
Write-on vials have a frosted patch on the glass for direct labeling with a permanent marker. Label vials have a pre-applied white label area. Both serve the same analytical purpose; choose based on your sample tracking workflow.
Yes. Our 9-425 screw thread vials in the 12 x 32 mm format are compatible with Agilent 1100, 1200, 1260, and 1290 series autosamplers, as well as the InfinityLab multisampler. Verify your tray configuration (standard, micro, or wide-neck) to ensure proper fit.
