Choosing the Right Membrane Filter

Membrane disc filters are used in vacuum filtration assemblies, syringe filter holders, and air monitoring cassettes. The membrane material determines chemical compatibility, while pore size determines the particle retention cutoff. Matching both to your application is critical for reliable filtration results.

🛡️Pre-filtration Tip

For heavily particulate samples, layer a glass fiber prefilter on top of your membrane in the filtration assembly. This prevents premature clogging of the membrane and extends throughput. Glass fiber discs with 1.0 µm retention make effective prefilters for 0.2–0.45 µm membranes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Membrane Filter FAQ

Use 0.2 µm (0.22 µm) for sterilization of buffers, media, and solutions. This pore size retains bacteria and most microorganisms. Note that 0.2 µm membranes do not remove mycoplasma or viruses.

0.22 µm is the standard for sterilizing filtration and UHPLC sample prep. 0.45 µm offers higher flow rates and is suitable for general clarification, HPLC sample prep, and removing visible particulates. Use 0.45 µm when sterility is not required.

Diameter depends on your filtration volume: 13mm for ≤1 mL, 25mm for 1–10 mL, 47mm for 10–200 mL, and 90mm for larger volumes. Match the disc to your filter holder or vacuum assembly.

PES, PVDF, and PTFE membranes can generally be autoclaved at 121°C. MCE and Nylon have limited autoclave tolerance. Always check the manufacturer specifications for your specific membrane and confirm compatibility with repeated sterilization cycles.

Surface filters (PTFE, Nylon, PES, MCE) capture particles at the membrane surface with a defined pore size. Depth filters (glass fiber) trap particles throughout the filter matrix. Depth filters handle higher particulate loads but have less precise cutoffs.
