Disposable Serological Pipettes
Serological pipettes are single-use, graduated tubes used with a pipette controller (pipette aid) for aspirating and dispensing volumes from 1 mL to 100 mL. They are essential for cell culture work, media preparation, reagent transfer, and any application requiring sterile liquid handling of moderate volumes. Color-coded plugs indicate pipette size for quick identification.
Serological Pipette by Volume
| Volume | Graduation | Color Code | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mL | 0.01 mL | Yellow | Small reagent additions, fine volume control |
| 2 mL | 0.02 mL | Green | Small volume transfers, titrations |
| 5 mL | 0.1 mL | Blue | Media aliquoting, cell suspensions |
| 10 mL | 0.1 mL | Orange | Media transfers, washing steps |
| 25 mL | 0.2 mL | Red | Large media transfers, bottle filling |
| 50 mL | 0.5 mL | Purple | Large-scale transfers, bioreactor feeding |
| 100 mL | 1.0 mL | Black | Bulk media transfer, large-scale culture |
Most serological pipettes come with a cotton or filter plug at the top to prevent liquid from entering the pipette controller. Plugged pipettes are the standard for cell culture and BSL-2 work. Unplugged pipettes are occasionally used for non-sterile applications where maximum flow rate is needed, but plugged versions are recommended for virtually all laboratory work.
Serological Pipette FAQ
Disposable serological pipettes are designed for ±2% accuracy at full volume when used correctly with a calibrated pipette controller. Accuracy decreases when dispensing volumes less than 20% of the pipette capacity. For example, do not use a 10 mL pipette to measure 0.5 mL — use a 1 mL or 2 mL pipette instead.
Individually wrapped (paper/plastic peel-pack) pipettes are sterile and preferred for cell culture and any work in a biosafety cabinet. Bulk-packed pipettes are stacked in a bag or dispenser box, cost less, and are suitable for non-sterile applications like general chemistry and buffer preparation.
Standard disposable serological pipettes are made from crystal-clear polystyrene (PS) with easy-to-read printed graduations. The material is chemically compatible with aqueous solutions, cell culture media, and common biological buffers. It is not recommended for strong organic solvents.
Serological pipettes can be graduated to deliver (TD) or to contain (TC). Most disposable lab pipettes are TD, meaning the marked volume is delivered when the liquid is expelled to the graduation mark. Do not blow out the residual unless the pipette has a blow-out band (double ring at the top).
We focus on disposable serological pipettes as consumables. For pipette controllers (pipette aids), check with your lab equipment supplier. Our pipettes are compatible with all standard controllers including Drummond, Eppendorf, Corning, and Integra.
