Headspace Analysis Vials
Headspace vials are designed for the analysis of volatile and semi-volatile compounds by GC and GC-MS. The sample is heated in a sealed vial, and the vapor (headspace) above the liquid or solid is sampled by the headspace autosampler and injected onto the GC column. Proper vial selection ensures a leak-tight seal and minimal background for accurate quantification.
The 20 mL vial is the most common for static headspace and is compatible with most HS autosamplers (Agilent, PerkinElmer TurboMatrix, Shimadzu). The 10 mL vial is used when sample volume is limited or for SPME (solid-phase microextraction). The 6 mL vial is for micro-scale or specialized applications. Always confirm your headspace sampler tray accepts the vial size.
Headspace Vial FAQ
Crimp caps (20mm aluminum) provide the tightest seal and are the standard for headspace analysis. Screw caps (18mm) are convenient for manual loading but may have slightly higher leak rates at elevated temperatures. Magnetic crimp caps combine the seal quality of crimps with tool-free application using a magnetic crimper. Choose based on your autosampler requirements and throughput needs.
Use PTFE/silicone composite septa (PTFE side facing the sample). The PTFE layer provides chemical inertness, and the silicone provides a gas-tight seal even after needle puncture. For high-temperature headspace (>80°C), use thick septa (3 mm) to maintain seal integrity under pressure.
Headspace vials can be washed and reused for non-critical applications, but the septa must always be replaced. For quantitative VOC analysis, use new vials and septa for every sample to prevent carryover. Certified clean vials are recommended for trace-level work.
For static headspace, fill the vial to approximately 50% of its volume to provide adequate headspace for equilibration. Overfilling reduces the headspace volume and can lead to liquid being aspirated into the transfer line. Underfilling reduces sensitivity.
