When to Use Vial Inserts

Vial inserts sit inside a standard 2 mL autosampler vial to reduce the working volume. This allows your autosampler needle to reach the bottom of a small sample without switching to a dedicated micro-vial format. Use inserts when you have limited sample volume (100–500 µL) but want to maintain compatibility with your existing 9-425 vial trays and caps.

💡Insert Selection

Flat-bottom inserts work well when the autosampler needle reaches the bottom of the insert. Conical (tapered) inserts are preferred for maximum sample recovery because the conical shape funnels the last drops to the needle tip. Spring-bottom inserts use a built-in spring to keep the insert centered in the vial, preventing tipping during autosampler operation.

Vial Insert FAQ

With a 150 µL conical insert, you can reliably inject from as little as 10–20 µL of sample, depending on your autosampler needle length and position. The conical geometry channels the sample to the lowest point, minimizing dead volume.

Glass inserts offer the best chemical inertness and are suitable for organic solvents and aggressive mobile phases. Polypropylene inserts are more economical, shatter-resistant, and suitable for aqueous samples. For trace analysis of active compounds, glass inserts (especially deactivated/silanized) are preferred.

Most micro inserts are designed for the standard 12 x 32 mm (2 mL) autosampler vial format. Verify the insert outer diameter (typically 5–6 mm) fits snugly inside your vial. Some inserts include a top flange or polyspring to keep them centered and stable.

Yes. Inserts are compatible with screw-cap, snap-cap, and crimp-top vials as long as the vial has the standard 12 x 32 mm body. The closure type does not affect insert fit. Just ensure the autosampler needle depth is adjusted to reach the bottom of the insert.
