Cell Culture Accessories Guide
Cell strainers are nylon mesh filters that fit standard 50 mL conical tubes. They are used to create single-cell suspensions from tissue digests, remove clumps from passaged cells, and filter debris before flow cytometry. Mesh sizes range from 40 um (tight, retains most clumps) to 100 um (loose, for large cell types). Inoculating loops are used in microbiology for streaking agar plates, transferring colonies, and inoculating liquid media. Our disposable loops are pre-sterilized and eliminate the need for flame sterilization. Cell maintenance products include trypsin-EDTA, PBS, and enzymatic dissociation reagents used for routine passaging, washing, and harvesting of adherent and suspension cell lines.
Choosing the right mesh size
| Mesh Size | Retains Particles Above | Best For | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 um | 40 um | Fine single-cell suspensions | Flow cytometry, FACS sorting, small cell types (lymphocytes, stem cells) |
| 70 um | 70 um | General-purpose straining | Primary tissue dissociation, most adherent cell lines, tumor digests |
| 100 um | 100 um | Removing large debris | Coarse tissue filtration, large cell types (hepatocytes, adipocytes) |
For flow cytometry: Always use 40 um strainers immediately before analysis to prevent clogging the cytometer nozzle. For primary tissue dissociation: Start with 100 um to remove large undigested tissue, then pass through 70 um for a cleaner suspension. Pre-wet the strainer mesh with PBS or media before adding your sample to improve flow-through and reduce cell loss on the nylon.
Cell Culture Accessories FAQ
Our cell strainers have a standard snap-cap design that fits 50 mL conical centrifuge tubes (Falcon-style). Place the strainer on the tube, pipette your cell suspension through the mesh, and the filtered single-cell suspension collects in the tube below. They are compatible with tubes from all major manufacturers.
Yes. Our inoculating loops are available in 1 uL and 10 uL calibrated volumes. The 1 uL loop is standard for colony counting and semi-quantitative urine cultures. The 10 uL loop delivers a defined volume for consistent colony isolation and streak plating. All loops are gamma-irradiated and individually wrapped.
Most adherent cell lines passage well with 0.05% trypsin-EDTA (1X working concentration). Tightly adherent cells (HEK293, primary fibroblasts) may require 0.25% trypsin-EDTA for efficient detachment. Minimize trypsin exposure time (2-5 minutes at 37C) and always neutralize with serum-containing media to prevent over-digestion and reduced viability.
Our cell maintenance category includes enzymatic dissociation reagents (trypsin, Accutase, TrypLE equivalents) and wash buffers. For mechanical harvesting tools like cell scrapers and lifters, contact us - we can source these through our supplier network and add them to your order.
