Selecting the Right Graduated Pipette
Serological pipettes are single-use, sterile, polystyrene pipettes designed for aseptic cell culture work. They are used with a pipette controller (motorized or manual) to aspirate and dispense media, reagents, and cell suspensions in biological safety cabinets. Available from 1 mL to 100 mL with color-coded bands for quick volume identification. Glass measuring pipettes are reusable, autoclavable pipettes made from borosilicate glass. They offer superior chemical resistance and are preferred for analytical chemistry, volumetric measurements, and work with organic solvents that would attack polystyrene.
Serological vs. glass graduated pipettes
| Feature | Serological (Disposable) | Glass (Reusable) |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Polystyrene (PS) or Polypropylene (PP) | Borosilicate glass (Class A or B) |
| Sterility | Pre-sterilized, individually wrapped | Requires autoclaving |
| Chemical Resistance | Aqueous solutions, media, mild acids/bases | Broad: organics, strong acids, bases |
| Accuracy Class | General purpose (2-3% tolerance) | Class A (0.5-1% tolerance) |
| Best For | Cell culture, BSC work, aseptic technique | Analytical chemistry, volumetric work |
| Cost Model | Disposable (per-use cost) | Reusable (higher upfront, lower long-term) |
Serological pipettes follow a standard color-coding system for rapid identification: Yellow = 1 mL, Green = 2 mL, Blue = 5 mL, Orange = 10 mL, Red = 25 mL, Purple = 50 mL. The color band is printed at the top of the pipette near the cotton plug and is visible even when wrapped. This system helps prevent volume errors during fast-paced tissue culture work.
Graduated Pipettes FAQ
Any standard pipette controller or pipette aid will work with our serological pipettes. Popular options include Drummond Pipet-Aid, Integra Pipetboy, and similar motorized controllers. Manual rubber bulbs also work but are less ergonomic for high-volume use. Our serological pipettes have standard diameter shafts compatible with all major controllers.
Yes. All our serological pipettes are individually wrapped in paper-plastic peel pouches and gamma-irradiated for sterility assurance. Each pipette is certified DNase/RNase-free, non-pyrogenic, and non-cytotoxic. The packaging maintains sterility until opened.
Class A pipettes meet the tightest volumetric tolerance (typically half the tolerance of Class B) and are required for analytical work where accuracy is critical, such as titrations and standard preparations. Class B pipettes have wider tolerances and are suitable for general laboratory use where the highest accuracy is not needed. Class A pipettes are individually serialized and come with a tolerance certificate.
No. Serological pipettes are designed for single use only. The polystyrene material will deform at autoclave temperatures (121C), and the graduation markings may become inaccurate. If you need a reusable option, choose borosilicate glass graduated pipettes which can be autoclaved, cleaned, and re-used indefinitely.
