Sodium citrate blood tubes, also known as blue-top tubes, are commonly used in medical laboratories for collecting blood samples for coagulation testing. The sodium citrate additive in these tubes acts as an anticoagulant by binding with calcium ions, thus preventing blood clotting. These tubes are primarily used for tests that assess coagulation function, such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and other clotting factor assays. By inhibiting clot formation, sodium citrate tubes allow for accurate measurement of clotting factors and help diagnose conditions such as bleeding disorders, thrombosis, and monitoring patients on anticoagulant therapy.
